Gear Section:
Can't say exactly who was playing through which amp but here goes... Walt played a blue Sadowsky Strat w/3 single coils, Don played the Rhodes most of the show and "that damn blue thing," Wayne Krantz played a natural Sadowsky Strat w/3 single coils, Tom Barney played Natural ESP 5 string with quilted maple top, Ricky Lawson played Remo kit with Paiste cymbals, John Beasley played a baby grand and an organ...couldn't see brand, Don't know about the horns, the two Lovely Ladies singing back-up wore black and stole my heart!
Amps: 2 small Mesa Maverick Dual Rectifier Class A Heads, with Mesa 2-12 cabs, 1 Bogner Ecstasy Head w/Bogner 4-12 cab, 1 small rack w/Sony Wireless Receiver, Tube Works pre-amp & Mesa Chrome Professional 20/20 Power Amp, 1 large rack w/Juice Goose Power Conditioner, Korg Digital Rack Tuner, Mesa/Boogie Tri-Axis pre-amp, Lexicon Reflex, Lexicon PCM 80, Custom Audio Trem/Reverb(2), Drawer Stereo Compressor, Hush Guitar Silencer, Walt has a Custom Audio Electronics Pedal Board...couldn't see face, 2 Gallien-Krueger Bass Heads w/3 SWR Cabs, each with 4-10's and a tweeter in the center of each cab.
I'm sure I've missed some details, if you have further questions I'll do the best I can on answering them... Now that all the tech stuff is out of the way I'd just like to say this...I thought the show was very tight with only very small glitches here and there...as anyone in music knows, there's no such thing as a perfect set. I thought Don's voice was in exceptional form. I thought Walt's vocals were great too and I disagree with whoever said his vocal was weak on Midnite Cruiser, the harmonies on that song could have been worked out a little better...I thought the 3 new songs cooked, can't wait for the new album! I thought Wayne's playing was very good, more economical than Drew but very, very tasty! The band is really tight and unless you just disagree with the song selection you will not be disappointed! Someone had commented on the crowd at the two earlier shows...Raleigh seemed to be pretty full...the lawn wasn't overflowing but it was a good crowd that was very vocal and the guys seemed to really apprecitate it. I was so close I couldn't hear the P.A. that good but the stage mix sounded excellent...I'll let someone who was farther back fill in the rest of the gaps.
One last parting note: I got one of Walt's guitar picks!!! Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!!! It's a Black Jim Dunlop 1mm pick...no engraved bullshit for old Walt! And that's it for me...I loved it, I think you will too!
I can now die a happy man, Midnite Cruiser

What a show, although they didn't take advantage of dear ole Raleigh's 11 pm curfew, and stopped short. Loved Billy Corgan (Beasley...?) on keyboards...One thing I thought was interesting...I dunno how everyone feels about the equality between the founding members but to the untrained eye it SUUURRRE looked like Donald was the bandleader to this partito, and he was using both barrels, baby (dunno what it means either but it sounds nice)! They need to pick up a soul sister to give their backup vocals some Umph, in this howlie's opinion. They didn't come through with the chorus to Midnite Cruiser - Walt has a hard enough time with melodies (another howlie opinion) and it came across as a spoken word arrangement, hardly any depth... Being all the way up in the right corner was a real treat, cause I've not seen the band this close, but I couldn't see Krantz and the horns too well, because of all the music stands in the way (hopefully they'll be off the stage SOON - learn them new songs quick, boys and girls!) - but from where I sat, I saw many empty seats. About 2/3 the attendance of what it could be. Altogether I was pleased with the gig and wish I coulda rescheduled the whole thing to another night..

Just got back from the show at Walnut Creek. Excellent show, with great sound (from the 14th row directly in front of left speakers), but the crowd could have been a little more into it. The majority seemed unfamiliar with lots of the great older material.
The set list: Do It Again, Bad Sneakers, Everyone's Gone to the Movies, Peg, Jack of Speed (song from upcoming album), Instrumental FM (during introduction of the band), Any Major Dude Will Tell You, Green Earrings, My Waterloo, Green Flower Street, Ruby Baby.
Intermission
East St. Louis Toodle-oo, Glamour Profession, Wet Side Story (another new one!), Cash Only Island (new...interesting lyrics), Midnight Cruiser, Black Cow, Home At Last, Kid Charlemagne.
Encores: IGY, Rikki, Don't Lose That Number
All in all, a good, balanced set; IMHO better than the one I saw in 1992, because it wasn't weighted so much toward Aja and Gaucho material. Black Cow and Kid Charlemagne were probably the highlights for me. The biggest disappointment of the night was Midnight Cruiser, which Walter tried to sing. He improved after the first verse, but the arrangement wasn't that great either. It was all but unrecognizable at points... The new material was promising, and I'm looking forward to the album. Those of you out there with tickets for upcoming shows will NOT be disappointed.

I went to the Steely Dan show in Raleigh on Sunday night and it was terrific. The percussion was overwhelming on the first song ("King of the World") and I was afraid the whole show would be spoiled, but apparently they made some adjustments because the rest was excellent. Particularly good versions of "Black Cow" and "Kid Charlemagne," plus some new stuff ("Jack of Speed" was the best) and one cover ("Ruby, Ruby" -- lyrics aren't normal SD fare but very very smooth). "Wet Side Story" didn't stand out; I can't remember the tune or any lyrics. We lucked into 7th row seats for face value despite deciding to go not an hour before showtime. All in all my best-ever concert experience.

Crowd wildly enthusiastic and the band responded with a show that left everyone drained but satisfied. The musicians are so much tighter than they were in Charleston last week and you just know it is going to get better and better!!!!D&W were obviously moved by the audience's response to the two extremely HOT sets. First of all, they (thankfully) changed the order of the songs so that everything flowed much more smoothly. Added to the Art Crimes '96 sets were Hey Nineteen, Josie, and My Old School, the latter of which replaced Rikki as the final encore.(Gee, maybe D&W do actually read this wonderful little guestbook). Krantz slayed the fans with solos that were fabulous (Peg, Midnight, Kid, and School) and his guitar interplay with WB was sweet and concise. The horns were boppin' hard and strong all night (you will go wild over Ari) and Ricky 's drumming kept a smile on Tom's face most all evening. The ladies sounded much more confident and looked hotter than, well, North Carolina asphalt. Beasley fits in better than Warren-his playing has a more contemporary feel. All in all 21 indescribable whacks of the Dan at their best . You are in for an unforgettable time when you see them!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh yeah--- Donald's voice is stronger than tugboat rope!!!!

From: Gms777@aol.com, Date: Thu, 11 Jul 1996 16:06:49 -0400, Subject: SPOILER: Charlotte Dan & Dan vs. Dead

7/10/96, Charlotte Blockbuster Pavillion, Do It Again, Bad Sneakers, Everyone's Gone to the Movies, Peg, Jack of Speed, FM/Band Introductions, Hey 19, Green Earrings, My Waterloo, Green Flower Street, Rikki, Don't Lose That Number, Josie, (Intermission), East St. Louis Toodle-oo, Glamour Profession, Wet Side Story, Cash Only Island, Midnight Cruiser, Black Cow, Home at Last, Kid Charlemagne, (Encores) IGY and My Old School (w/long instrumental outro)
The show started slow with a tentative-sounding 'Do It Again.' Not until 'Peg' did the band ignite. The new 'Jack of Speed' followed and was well received, as were the other two new songs with 'Wet Side Story' seeming to be the audience's favorite. The use of 'FM' as background music for the band introductions was a bit of a fizzle. Instead of soaring, the song noodled. 'My Waterloo' was the low point of the first set. It rebounded with ripping versions of 'Green Flower, Rikki, and Josie.' As for the second set, 'Black Cow' won the most audience response, and 'Kid Charlemagne' was a strong closer. Overall, I enjoyed the Nashville show during the first tour more (as well as the gig in Atlanta in '94)--but I was pretty darn excited to be seeing the band for the first time back then. An increasingly white-haired Fagen said that he and Becker expected to go into the studio in the fall to record the new album. At one point he seemed to apologize for the raggedness of the new songs. To this listener's ear, they sounded well rehearsed and tightly constructed. (And immediately and immensely likeable as well.) Although no release date for the new Steely Dan album was mentioned, next summer might be the time with--dare we hope and pray--an accompanying tour.
And a P.S., regarding the recent letter comparing the Dan and the Dead: Before the show, the recorded warm-up music included 'Sittin' on Top of the World' and 'New Minglewood Blues' from the Dead's eponymous first outing. I thought the author of the Dan/Dead comparison letter was 'dead' on with his comments, so to speak, and I'd add a few other differences. The Dan have more of an urban, slick, east coast feel whereas the Dead were more rural, west coast-y, whatever that means. The two bands do have a few things in common: Wonderful lyrics, great musicianship, and a 'we'll do it our own way, thank you very much' attitude that helped win them loyal followings.

Random Notes The stage set-up was simple. Lighting provided most of the mood of the set. Overall the sound was good, the Sun Dome's accoustics are so-so at best. The venue was about 75 to 80% full. The back-up singers were great. Really complemented Donald's voice. Ricky Lawson and Wayne Krantz kicked a**. Great additions to the band. I agree with an early post about Donald's voice, it seems better this tour. Walter's voice was strong too. He looked like he was having a good time. The Tampa crowd only heard two of the three new songs. Were was "Cash Only Island"? Walter's quote during the show "The next album should be out anytime in the next 30 years.". I'm marking my calendar for July 2026. What will be the recording format then? Good T-shirts but no programs on sale. You can't tell the players without a program.
Overall a great time. The band looked like they were having fun. Eight stars out of ten. Can't wait for West Palm Beach later today and Orlando on Sunday. It's a Steely Dan weekend, what could be better?
From the DanFan Guestbook, Under the Banyan Trees: M. meaddy@gate.net Fri Jul 12 23:18:44 PDT 1996 writes: The show was a cool thrill... band was tight... Wayne, the lead guitarist was impressive... the crowd was very appreciative. However, I don't think I will return to the Gestapo venue (ie: SunDome security monitor types - metal detectors - full body cavity search at the entrance :O and t-shirt police too) Favorite song was Home at Last. You should have been there!!
Philip Booth, music critic of The Tampa Tribune on Saturday, July 13, wrote: Steely Dan still knows how to rock TAMPA - Donald Fagen and Walter Becker once wielded Steely Dan as a tool of musical subversion. The duo's gift - smart pop injected with jazzy harmonies - 15 years after the two split seems downright passe. Their mining of the past, though, with such shows as Friday night's ear feast at the USF Sun Dome, seems less cynical in light of the pair's concert strategy. Fagen, on vocals and keyboards, and Becker, on guitar, were joined by a seven-piece band and two vocalists for often dramatic reworkings of familiar material. The two-set show spanned from Steely Dan's debut album, 1972's "Can't Buy a Thrill,'' through the band's last studio disc, 1981's "Gaucho,'' and included several unreleased tunes. The concert opened, appropriately enough, with "Do It Again,'' the group's debut hit single. The top-grade horn section - saxophonists Cornelius Bumpus and Ari Ambrose, and trumpeter Michael Leonhart - emphasized textures not heard in the original. And guitarist Wayne Krantz, the band's secret weapon, plowed through an angular improvisation during an open-wide solo section. Ditto for much of the rest, a string of pop gems including "Peg,'' "Hey Nineteen,'' "Green Earrings,'' "Rikki Don't Lose That Number,'' "Josie,'' "Black Cow,'' "Home at Last'' and "Kid Charlemagne.'' Becker, Fagen, Krantz, bassist Tom Barney and drummer Ricky Lawson absolutely nailed the funk, R&B and rock rhythms. Fagen's solo-album tunes - "Green Flower Street,'' "Tomorrow's Girls'' and "I.G.Y.'' - proved Dan-worthy. New Becker-Fagen collaborations "Jack of Speed'' and "Wet Side Story,'' though, disappointed. Both proved retreads, sadly absent of the old inspiration.
From the Steely Fan Digest:
From: jcooker@gnofn.org Date: Mon, 15 Jul 1996 10:25:52 -0600 Subject: SPOILER: Tampa
The Tampa show seemed to reveal this year's Dan tour settling into a very nice groove -- as they delivered a fine-tuned, well-oiled, but-ready-and-willing-to-kick-out-the-jams-at-any-moment performance to a packed house of Dan fanatics. Set lists were similar to the Charlotte show (sorry I didn't have a pen), with standing ovations throughout -- especially for Josie, Peg, Hey 19, etc.
I drove 650 miles from New Orleans each way for this and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen, despite the somewhat unattentive people in our section who just wouldn't shut up. (These are the same fools who left before the encore -- missing an incredible IGY and My Old School). Note for future concert attendees: If you can't see a show without babbling incessantly about what you did earlier that day, or that week, etc. just stay at home, please -- you'll just ruin the shows for everybody else.
Also, on this note: Rick Webber said: "Maybe it's just me but I think any new material should be so that it wouldn't be out of place on Gaucho or Aja. And I don't want to hear Walter sing." Rick, How about something NEW? -- more wild and funky Dan chord structures and lyrics from those incredible minds? come on, Rick, take a chance. Let the guys go out on a limb for you and bring back something you never knew was missing from your life. Of course, I love it when Walter sings -- Book of Liars is one of my favorite songs. It's nice when those guys mix up the vocals. How can you be a true Dan fan and not love the originality of Walter's voice? By the way, Wet Side Story was pretty groovy -- I think you'd probably like it.
Finally, on the Dead fan thing: Why not be more open to a Deadhead-Dan crossover audience? -- yes, both bands have considerable differences musically and stylistically, but there is an incredible similarity between them in how certain tunes (most of them) by each band can instill one with a sense of acoustic euphoria. I get chills when I hear certain Dead sets/songs live -- the same chills I got when Fagen and Becker busted out Bad Sneakers, or Josie, or Home At Last, or Kid Charlemagne in Tampa. No other groups do that to me the way these two bands do, and therein lies their powerful and moving common ground.
And what's wrong with some extended jams? The drum solo on the Tampa Josie was unbelievable -- that's the kind of thing I pray for in a live performance. I hope the guys continue to explore themselves even more musically in live performances (in their own way) -- what harm could come from it? hell, they might even have fun and attract even more fans in the process. Oh yeah, and I wish they'd allow taping -- I'd be playing that Tampa show right now if they had.
